The Unity Candle

There are often many symbols of the bride and groom's unity throughout a wedding day. From ribbons to bells to figurines, symbolism holds a strong presence within a wedding day. However, nothing describes the union of two into one as that of the lighting of a unity candle during a ceremony. Typically a unity candle is lit during a Catholic (or similar church's) ceremony but may compliment any ceremony nicely. Typically, at some point during the wedding ceremony, the person officiating will announce the time for the lighting of the unity candle, at which point both the bride & the groom take hold of a pre-lit candle at the alter. Then both the bride & groom will together light one larger candle, marking their union as one.

A Unity Candle

While several versions of this tradition are prevelant throughout history, today's lighting of the candle involves happiness, humor, and joy as both parties become one. While there are specific songs just for the lighting of the unity candle, several brides and grooms go with their personal favorites or with songs that hold a special place in their hearts. Typically, the unity candle song is one that symbolizes the union of two into one and is one that will leave those in attendance in awe. Whatever type of ceremony that a bride and groom would be desiring, there would more than likely be a fitting unity candle song in our library.

We have included a list of some of frequently used or popular unity candle songs below and we encourage our clients to go over the list and then look for them in our on-line database, listen to them, and decide whether or not that specific song is right for their needs. And if the song isn't and we don't have the song that they seek, we encourage them to contact us with their song suggestion or requests and we will work at getting that song in our database in time for their wedding ceremony.
